Round two – ding ding
New Zealand Rugby-Foundation Wheelchair Rugby Competition’s round two was held the weekend of 17-18 May at Auckland's Alan Brewster Centre.
Teams are in a healthy state with most teams having a full roster and rotating a number of players to display very good rugby over the weekend. With the round-robin over and teams split into pools it looks like it could be a tight race at the top with the two Auckland teams dominating and the two Canterbury teams not far behind.
Regions have embraced the concept of the NZRFWRC where it is an opportunity and development for new and existing players. The standard of rugby is definitely lifting throughout all regions.
Another great weekend for New Zealand wheelchair rugby done and dusted. See you at the final round of NZRFWRC in Palmerston North 19th -20th July.
Auckland WRC Round two.
16 – 18th May
As for round one we were one referee down and hence most of us had back – to – backs. The aim I have set for NZ referees this year is to count accurately and move to the correct position to prevent fouls from going unnoticed. Most are trying to achieve this. It is interesting to note that some fouls which you would never have called a couple of years ago seem to be quite prevalent i.e. pushing. I have asked the referees to be quite vigilant on the hands fouls especially it being a Paralympics year as the Wheel Blacks and all other players will need to show discipline in this area.
The other thing I talked to the referees about is improving their fitness. As everyone knows if you are physically fit you will be mentally able to make decisions quickly and accurately.
