Explodes Into Action
Round one of the New Zealand Rugby-Foundation’s Wheelchair Rugby series began with a hiss and a roar at Cowles Stadium in Christchurch at the weekend.
The inclusion of able body players and paraplegics (graded 4.5 & 4.0) has provided a formidable eight teams compete in this year's series. National squad members preparing for Beijing and Low Point players on a high following a successful national tournament, new players, re-graded players and new team mixes, all makes for a very exciting tournament.
Entering into the spirit of why the competition was formed - to give more opportunity for athletes to compete, develop new and potential players – teams competitively wasn’t hindered even with inevitable injuries and unavailable players that happens in all sport.
Teams to shine early and look like angling towards a top four finish are Auckland White, Canterbury Red, Manawatu and Auckland Blue. The next round to be held in Auckland on the 17th -18th May promises more hum dinger games before final berths are decided and mantle's competed for in Palmerston North 19th -20th July.
